 Prevention

Yellow fever

Yellow fever vaccination is not required.

Tick-borne encephalitis

This viral disease is transmitted by the bite of infected ticks. Vaccination is recommended when staying in areas with a higher risk of infection. The risk decreases in the winter months.

Rabies

Infection typically occurs through contact with the saliva of an infected animal, usually caused by bites, scratches or licks near open wounds or mucous membranes (e.g. mouth, nose, eyes). The most common vectors are dogs and bats, but cases of infection in other domestic animals have also been reported.

Tetanus

Caused by toxins released by the bacterium Clostridium tetani, the risk of tetanus infection is present throughout the country.

Insect bites and stings

Diseases such as West Nile virus are present in Western Europe. As this disease is transmitted by insect bites and there is no vaccine, it is important to adopt careful behavioural and preventive measures.

The following vaccinations are strongly recommended as these diseases can be contracted anywhere in the world. Experts advise that you protect yourself and other travellers by making sure you are up-to-date with all of the recommended vaccinations. This will allow you to travel safely, while minimising the risk of exposure to infection.

 Territory and climate

Austria borders the Czech Republic to the north, Germany, Liechtenstein and Switzerland to the west, Italy and Slovenia to the south, and Hungary and Slovakia to the east.

The territory stretches from west to east, following the mountain chain of the Alps, widening into a vast area of highlands toward the eastern borders. On average, the country's mountain ranges are very high, with the highest peak standing at 3,800 meters; there are also numerous glaciers. The Danube runs through the northern part of the country for approximately 350 km.

The climate is continental and influenced by humid air masses from the Atlantic that cause abundant rainfall. Given the high elevation of the area, temperatures are cold and temperature variations become more and more extreme as you proceed eastward. It is also interesting to note the variations in sunlight that occur in the valleys, which create very different weather conditions depending on the direction of each slope.
