Hepatitis A is generally transmitted through contaminated food and water, or through close physical contact with an infected person, while hepatitis B is transmitted through exposure to infected body fluids and blood.
Infection typically occurs through contact with the saliva of an infected animal, usually through bites, scratches or licks near open wounds or membranes (mouth, nose, eyes). The most common vectors are dogs and bats, but cases of infection in other domestic animals have also been reported.
This disease is spread by mosquito bites and there is no vaccine. Therefore, it is important to take preventive measures by implementing behavioural prophylaxes.
The following vaccinations are strongly recommended as these diseases can be contracted anywhere in the world. Experts advise that you protect yourself and other travellers by making sure you are up-to-date with all of the recommended vaccinations. This will allow you to travel safely, while minimising the risk of exposure to infection.
Japan is an island state in east Asia consisting of more than 3,000 islands. It extends in a northeast/southwest direction for about 2,400 km, forming an arc facing the Asian coast that encloses the Sea of Japan; the other side is lapped by the Pacific Ocean.
The four major islands are, starting from the north, Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu; they have a predominantly mountainous terrain that is home to more than 160 active volcanoes, among which Mount Fuji (the highest in the country at 3,776 mt) dominates. One of the few plains is located in the centre of the coastal region on the Pacific side that houses the capital’s urban settlements.
Various elements influence the country's climate, including its unusual latitudinal range. The Siberian monsoon hits the northern region from October to April, but not the southern and generates heavy rainfall on the coasts. From May to September, by contrast, the monsoon from the south affects the southern and eastern regions, which are therefore more exposed to rainfall between June and July. Temperatures drop proceeding northward; averaging 27°C in summer and 10°C in winter Kyushu, while in Hokkaido during the same periods it ranges from 16°C to -5°C.
