Yellow fever vaccination is not required.
This viral disease is transmitted by the bite of infected ticks. Vaccination is recommended when staying in areas with a higher risk of infection. The risk decreases in the winter months.
Infection typically occurs through contact with the saliva of an infected animal, usually caused by bites, scratches or licks near open wounds or mucous membranes (e.g. mouth, nose, eyes). The most common vectors are dogs and bats, but cases of infection in other domestic animals have also been reported.
Caused by toxins released by the bacterium Clostridium tetani, the risk of tetanus infection is present throughout the country.
Diseases such as Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever, Leishmaniasis, and West Nile virus are present in Southern Europe. As these diseases are transmitted by insect bites and there are no vaccines, it is important to adopt careful behavioural and preventive measures.
The following vaccinations are strongly recommended as these diseases can be contracted anywhere in the world. Experts advise that you protect yourself and other travellers by making sure you are up-to-date with all of the recommended vaccinations. This will allow you to travel safely, while minimising the risk of exposure to infection.
Sweden’s territory comprises a mainland region on the Scandinavian Peninsula, the Baltic Islands and other smaller islands. The country is bordered by Norway to the west and northwest, Finland to the northeast, the Gulf of Bothnia to the east, and the Baltic Sea to the east and southeast. It is separated from Denmark by the Øresund Channel.
On the eastern side of the northern area lie the Scandinavian Alps (with elevations of over 2,000 m), where there are frequent glaciers and rivers that cross the highlands towards the sea. The climate along the coastline of the Gulf of Bothnia allows for human settlement.
Toward the south, there are numerous lakes of various sizes. As you get closer to the Baltic Sea, the terrain becomes flatter, giving way to many rivers.
Due to the vastness of the territory, there are significant climatic difference between the north and the south. Summers are generally cool, but there is a difference of at least 9°C between the two extremes of the country; the same applies in winter, where the difference in temperature is even greater. Precipitation is abundant on the alpine ridge and almost always falls as snow, with lingering snow cover for up to eight months a year, which diminishes as you move from north to east.
