Mexico: gang violence continues

armed group ambushed and killed more than thirteen law enforcement officers in the Mexican state of Guerrero on Monday, 23 October, including a police chief, adding to a soaring number of deadly attacks against the police in the region. Statistically, Guerrero is one of the most dangerous states in Mexico for law enforcement officers, with more than 34 killed in 2023, according to Common Cause, a Mexico-based organization tracking the killings of police officers in the country. o On the same day, in the state of Michoacan, just north of Guerrero, gunmen killed five people while targeting the brother of a local mayor. Overall, more than 340 police officers have been killed this year in the country, and more than 400 last year. Much of the violence in recent years can be traced to rival drug cartels competing for territory.
