They are three diseases of viral origin, among the most common in childhood. Measles is characterised by a rash that can cover the entire body. Mumps causes swelling of the parotid glands, hence the common name “mumps”. Rubella is characterized by a rash.

The three diseases share an endemic pattern, which means they are constantly present in the community and pose a risk to susceptible individuals. A high incidence was also noted among international travellers going to developing countries.

Vaccination includes 2 doses, with a booster given at least 4 weeks after the first dose. The Italian National Vaccination Plan calls for the administration in children of the first dose between 12 and 15 months and a booster between 5 and 6 years of age.

The vaccine is composed of the Enders Edmonston live, attenuated measles virus, the Jeryl Lynn™ (Level B) mumps strain and the Wistar RA 27/3 rubella strain. It is typically administered subcutaneously, but can also be given by intramuscular injection.
